Isla Margarita / Venezuela

last updated: 08.01.00

Just off the Venezuelan coast, is the island of Margarita, which has become world renowned for outstanding Windsurfing. It's reliable wind has made it a mecca for recreational windsurfers. This coastal island is consistently windy, predictably inexpensive and culturally exciting - you feel as if you have really left home and descended upon an exotic and diverse Caribbean destination.

Sailing Conditions

The climate is incredible. Durring the day, the cloudless sky is warm and dry. The water consistently hovers around 26° C, but you might want to wear a shorty to avoid the wind-chill factor from the strong, solid trade winds.

This is a typical trade wind location, with the wind nearly calm in the morning, building like clockwork troughout the course of the day. The peak winds occur between 3 pm and 5.30 p.m. . From mid-December through June, the wind will blow in the 15 knot to 25 knot range most days. The peak month are February and March, where 20 knot to 30 knot winds are the usual fare.

At El Yaque, where the majority of people sail, the wind is sideshore and you can stand for the first 150 yards from the beach. This is an excellent place to wire your waterstarts or your jibes. Wear booties to avoid any foot injuries ! More advanced sailors can take advantage of the bump & jump conditions of the off-shore waters.
